Overview of ultrasound fracture treatment
The ultrasound fracture treatment is a method to promote a healing of fractures by applying low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) to the fracture site for 20 minutes a day. Clinical trials report that this treatment is used for refractory fractures and also can reduce the period for bone union in fresh fractures.
・ Delayed union: when a fracture doesn’t unite even when adequate time has elapsed for healing (approximately 3 months).
・ Nonunion: fracture that will not heal without further intervention.
Fracture healing process becomes quiescent, fracture sights show abnormal movement, and bone fragments are separated by connective tissue.
LIPUS treatment is non-invasive with no side effects because of the low intensity used and is an effective treatment method.
